More About Camp
Located in the Adirondacks along a secluded nine-mile lake, 20 miles northeast of Utica, New York, is a seven-week overnight coed camp for 165 children from across the United States and around the world. Camp Northwood is oriented toward children with low self-esteem, immature social skill development, learning challenges, attention deficit disorders and children at the high end of the PDD spectrum in need of a structured and supportive summer environment. The Camp Northwood program, administered by an outstanding and dedicated staff trained in the area of special education, is directed towards the development of independence, social skills, improvement of each camper's self-image and maintenance of academic skills.
At Northwood, each camper participates in a full non-competitive "main-streamed" like camp environment. A camper/ counselor ratio of 2:1 provides a high level of individualization at activities. This individualization is carried over into the cabins ensuring each camper's feelings of success throughout their summer experience. In addition to the traditional camp activities, each child participates in an individually designed academic program. The emphasis of this academic program is to enable each camper to maintain current skill levels achieved the previous spring term at school.
Throughout the summer, Northwood campers are exposed to a variety of social experiences designed to foster age-appropriate social skills. Group skill sessions and constant reinforcement within the cabin setting foster growth in each camper's ability to work as part of a team, understand the social thoughts and feelings of peers and create the confidence necessary to express social concerns or needs.
Although we take great pride in our outstanding facilities and scenic surroundings, we feel that the most important and impressive aspect of Camp Northwood is its staff. Because we strongly believe that the success of our program depends on those who administer it, our staff is selected with an emphasis on maturity, dedication, teaching experience and academic training in special education and other related fields. A high return rate of staff ensures continuity within the Northwood program from year to year. It is our philosophy that specialists should be skilled teachers in their specialty areas as well as function as effective general counselors, concerned with the holistic development of their assigned campers.
