More About Camp
Friday - Day One... This first day, participants will learn how to select a campsite, the parts of a tent, and will then put their new knowledge into direct affect by putting up their own tent. After an orientation at camp, participants will learn about base camping, building a fire, and how to cook outdoors by helping to prepare their first dinner. Once dinner has been cleaned up, there will be an instructional session on emergency procedures at camp before turning in for the night.
Saturday - Day Two... The morning session will involve a visit from K-9 Search and Rescue Team Inc. who will a give demonstration on what happens when someone gets lost and what a person should do while waiting to be rescued. A hearty lunch with the SAR team will be followed by a session on the weather - how to read the basic signs, how to dress for inclement weather, and what to do when weather gets too crazy! An instructional lesson on how to plan a day hike will follow, and dinner is followed by a short night hike to observe the stars.
Sunday - Day Three... Participants will be involved in a short basic navigation class - introducing them to a map and compass, as well as a GPS unit. This will prepare students for a short day hike that they planned the previous day which will include a packed lunch on the hike. Returning to the base camp after lunch, participants will continue practicing their base camp skills before dinner. After dinner, participants will have a fun last evening together around the campfire telling stories, singing songs, and reliving their camp experiences!
Monday - Day Four... Another early breakfast will be followed by participants breaking down camp, learning to clean out and store equipment, fold tents, and return a camp site to its condition prior to arrival. We will then drive back together to the Dolores Schools student parking lot for a 12noon pick up by parents.
