Camp Carefree provides a free week of summer camp for children with chronic conditions and illnesses. Children are provided a traditional summer camp to laugh and play; focusing on what makes them unique, and not what makes them different.

At NCTRC, we believe in the power of inclusion and the joy of exploration (and of course in the magic of horses!). Nestled in the serene countryside of Mebane, our camp offers an enriching experience for children aged 6 to 11, with or without disabilities. 5-year-olds who are ready for a morning adventure are welcome too!

We offer a unique program for individuals with autism using visually structured programming, 1:1 and 1:2 positive support from well trained college and graduate students, development of independent living skills, and opportunities for engaging in social interaction with peers.

Each counselor is responsible for leading 1-2 campers each session through a week of typical camping activities, such as swimming, arts and crafts, hiking, boating, etc. Responsibilities include adapting activities and environments to camper needs, assisting campers in areas of communication, personal care, and other deficit areas, and encouraging participation.
