Caregivers

All campers must be Deaf or Hard of Hearing. Campers with severe secondary disabilities that interfere with camper's ability to dress, feed, bathe and get themselves to activities independently may have a personal care attendant with them to facilitate the camper being able to participate in all aspects of camp. Caregivers will be housed in the same cabin as the camper, and must be the same gender. Caregivers may not be parents nor grandparents. Aunts, Uncles, teachers, and camper's regular caregivers have attended in the past. Camp does not pay caregivers but will provide room and board at no cost to the camper. Camp is small, with limited spots for caregivers.

First full week of August every year. Registrations and payments are due July 15th of each year.

We can help direct families to other organizations that frequently offer scholarships to attend our camp. Our website offers locations on how families can seek assistance on their own and if we are currently offering a scholarship for the next camp.

No camper is forced to eat anything they don't want. All dietary needs will be made known to the kitchen. Campers with severe or very specific food needs can bring their own to deliver to kitchen upon check in.

This is a traditional, week-long residential camp for Deaf and Hard of Hearing youth that stretches back to 1978, beginning as Camp Amigo by Lion member, Chris Williams. Today the camp honors his commitment to D/HH youth, renaming the camp with his name after his death in 1984.

Camp serves youth ages 11-17. Currently, each year has a different annual theme, 2024 is Tropical Islands. Building on transitional activities to adulthood, along with typical camp activates enjoyed by campers. Mixed in with wall-climbing, boating, ropes course, swimming, arts and crafts, nature hikes are Leadership Training, mock interviews for jobs, perhaps even creating resumes, meeting adult Deaf and hard of hearing role models, and getting to explore bits of their careers. In the past few years, we have met adult D/HH: nurse, Federal Government recruiter, veterinarian, engineer, scientist, filmmaker and woodworker. You'll never know who you'll meet at camp!

Due to space limitations, all campers must have a hearing loss and be of or between the ages 11-17. Interpreters are provided, so campers do not need to know American Sign Language. However, campers need to be at least open to being exposed to a lot of signing and will be expected to pick up some signs. Campers are respectful to all modes of communication other campers may have. Many of our campers are bilingual, (both sign and speak.)
